The transformation to a low-carbon economy is continuing apace. Costs of renewable energy are coming down rapidly and investment is up.
Yet many questions remain. Will costs come down fast enough? Can the pace of innovation be maintained? Which are the most promising new technologies? How should markets and regulatory frameworks be organised to give the right incentives?
Energy Post is hosting an event in Brussels on 28 September in partnership with EDF (Électricité de France) to provide some answers to these crucial questions.
EDF, the leading investor in European energy R&D, has an annual R&D budget of €650 million, accounting for no less than 40% of all R&D spending of European utility companies, acccording to the independent ESMT Innovation Index of the Berlin-based European School of Management and Technology (ESMT). Of this, 60% goes to renewables, 40% to nuclear research.
At the event, five researchers from the new EDF Lab at Paris-Saclay will share with us their latest insights into their areas of expertise: electrical storage, solar power, tidal energy, electric mobility and smart grids.
Panel debate
The presentations from the EDF experts will be followed by a panel debate, led by our Brussels correspondent Sonja van Renssen and featuring Jean-Luc Chabard, Scientific Director at the new EDF Lab.
In an interview for Energy Post last week, Chabard said that EDF’s low-carbon energy research has four priorities: the development of local energy systems and the way that these systems interact with larger ones; data science and the digital revolutilon; storage, batteries, solar PV and electro-mobility; and small modular nuclear reactors. Electricity storage, he noted, “is the holy grail for an electricity producer”. He will say a lot more on the 28th.
